Trustee Marion Hafterson has been with BHS since the beginning. She is one of the organization’s charter members! BHS is a member of the Association of King County Historical Organizations (AKCHO). Marion is our direct link to their goings-on and she brings an update to our monthly trustee meetings.
AKCHO’s annual meeting was most recently held at the Nordic Heritage Museum. The topic was the 1962 Seattle’s World’s Fair.
Can you believe 2012 will be the 50th anniversary of this event? Here is her report:
In 1962 Seattle invited the world to imagine a shared future. In 2012, the Seattle Center will host the 50th anniversary of the World’s Fair. Like the original, the celebration will run from April 21 to October 21. Many projects are underway, including a commemorative book by HistoryLink. The book will include photos of family excursions to the Fair and first-hand accounts of Elvis! At the AKCHO annual meeting, several people told their stories. One lady related being an extra in a movie with Elvis and having chatted with him! Others told about the household guests they had who came to see the fair. Others told of working the Fair booths.
Thank you, Marion! Marion tells us she was living in California at the time and drove up to see the Fair. Did you or do you know someone who attended the Fair? We’d love to hear your story — just post a comment below! We hope to follow the progress of the book and upcoming celebrations for the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair and its connections to Ballard. In the meantime, please visit our Local Links page to learn more about AKCHO and other related organizations.
Update 5/8/14: Here’s Marion’s membership card, found recently on a shelf at her home. We no longer issue membership cards, so this is a piece of history in itself. But we’d love to have you join us in efforts to preserve Ballard’s history.
